#PoTW: An Evening of Music, Portuguese Culture and History

Dr. Shihan de Silva Jayasuriya is a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Britain.

Dr. Shihan de Silva Jayasuriya is a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Britain. Formerly she was a Research Associate in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at King’s College, University of London. Shihan has authored eight books covering a wide range of expertise from diaspora studies, cultural history, historical linguistics to ethnomusicology.

Shihan has delivered lectures to the Royal Asiatic Society (London), Royal African Society (London), UNESCO (Paris), Indian Ocean Centre (Berlin), Canning House (Anglo-Portuguese Society), British Caribbean Society, Chatham House, National Army Museum, Docklands Museum, International Centre for Ethnic Studies (Kandy and Colombo) and at numerous academic institutions including the universities of Barcelona, Colombo, Kobe, Kansai, Rostock, Salzburg and Vienna.

The Friends of Sri Lanka Association are delighted to invite Shihan to speak to our members and their guests at the prestigious Senate House in London about her latest book “Portuguese In The East: Cultural History of a Maritime Trading Empire.” Her talk will focus on the Portuguese influences on Sri Lanka ranging from baila music, song and dance to linguistic impressions in the local languages which signal the areas of cross-cultural contact. Shihan will also play some baila to liven the evening.
